SGBAU Foundation of Artificial Intelligence Syllabus, exam pattern and grading for Semester V, all UG programmes, from 2026-27
Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University has made a 2-credit AI course compulsory for every undergraduate student in the third year, whether you study Arts, Commerce, Science, Engineering or any other faculty. Here is everything in the notification, explained simply.

In short
Foundation of Artificial Intelligence is a compulsory, 2-credit, 50-mark course in Semester V of every SGBAU undergraduate programme from 2026-27. It has 4 units (30 teaching hours) covering AI basics, how AI systems work, AI in society, and ethics and careers. The college sets and checks a 2-hour, 30-mark paper, plus 20 internal marks. You need 30% in internal, 30% in external and 40% overall to pass, and your final-year result will not be declared without Grade A, B or C in this course. Answers can be written in English, Marathi or Hindi.
Syllabus: four units, 30 hours
Each square is one teaching hour. The paper has one question per unit, so every unit counts in the exam.

Exam pattern and marking scheme
The college or department sets the paper and evaluates it on the date fixed by the university, then uploads your grade on the university portal.
Internal assessment
20 marks
- 5 marks for attendance
- 15 marks for class test, assignment, viva voce or presentation
- Minimum to pass: 6 marks (30%)
External examination
30 marks
- Duration: 2 hours
- 15 marks short answer, 15 marks long answer, across 4 units
- Minimum to pass: 9 marks (30%)

*The gazette lists 3(a) as 8 marks and 3(b) as 7 marks, and the question-wise marks add up to 30 or 31 depending on the option. The stated external total is 30. Confirm the final question-wise split with your college before the exam.
Grades and passing rules: check your grade

Rules every student should know
Result depends on it
Your final-year degree result will not be declared unless you get Grade A, B or C in this course.
Where the grade appears
On your Semester V marksheet and on your final-semester marksheet.
Fees
Rs 150 paid to your college in Semester V. It covers teaching, paper setting, printing, evaluation and portal entry.
If you fail
Appear in the backlog exam by paying Rs 20. There is no revaluation of answer books.
Language
Teaching, question papers and answers are allowed in English, Marathi and Hindi.
Answer book custody
Colleges keep evaluated answer books for one academic year. The university may verify them at random.
Who can teach
Anyone with a PG degree in any faculty with at least second class. Priority goes to Ph.D., NET or SET holders and regular teachers.
Teaching load
2 lecture hours per week, 30 hours in total across the four units.

Frequently asked questions
Is Foundation of Artificial Intelligence compulsory at SGBAU?
Yes. As per Notification No. 241/2025 dated 24 December 2025, it is compulsory in Semester V of every undergraduate programme in all faculties, from the academic session 2026-27.
I am a BA or B.Com student. Do I need coding for this course?
No. The syllabus is written for students of all faculties. It focuses on concepts, real-life examples, applications and ethics, and the career unit specifically covers non-programming roles.
What are the passing marks?
At least 6 out of 20 in internal, at least 9 out of 30 in external, and at least 20 out of 50 overall. Grade A is 30 to 50, B is 25 to 29, C is 20 to 24.
Can I write the exam in Marathi or Hindi?
Yes. Instruction, paper setting and answer writing are allowed in English, Marathi and Hindi.
What happens if I fail?
You appear in the backlog examination by paying Rs 20. Your final-year result is held until you secure Grade A, B or C. There is no revaluation.
