Class 6 is where artificial intelligence enters CBSE’s curriculum — 100 hours in total, split as 40 hours advanced computational thinking, 20 hours introductory AI and 40 hours of interdisciplinary projects. The AI content is conceptual and ethical: no coding, no model building, no tools.
That last point is the one schools most often miss. Class 6 AI teaches what AI is, how data works, how patterns become decisions, and how to behave responsibly online. A school that responds to the mandate by buying a coding platform has answered a question the curriculum did not ask.
Part 1 — Computational Thinking chapters
The CT half runs through the mathematics chapters:
- Patterns in Mathematics — series recognition and logical sequences
- Lines and Angles — geometric relationships and spatial reasoning
- Number Play — numerical puzzles and logic problems
- Data Handling and Presentation — organising and visualising information
- Prime Time — prime numbers and divisibility
- Perimeter and Area — spatial measurement and calculation
- Fractions — rational number operations and relationships
- Playing with Constructions — geometric assembly and spatial problem-solving
- Symmetry — mirror relationships and rotational properties
- The Other Side of Zero — integer operations and negative numbers
Data Handling and Presentation is the chapter to sequence carefully — teach it before the AI unit, not after, because Basic Data Concepts assumes it.
Part 2 — the four AI chapters

Twenty hours across four chapters is about five hours each. That is enough to build understanding and nowhere near enough to build technical skill — which is the correct trade for eleven-year-olds.
How to teach each AI chapter well
Introduction to AI and Everyday Examples
Start from what students already use — recommendations, autocorrect, face unlock, voice assistants — and work backwards to the concept. The human vs machine intelligence comparison is the heart of the chapter: build it around what each is bad at, not what each is good at, because the failures are more memorable and more useful.
Basic Data Concepts
Have students collect real data about their own class — heights, travel times, favourite subjects. Then ask the question that carries the whole unit: what could someone conclude from this that would be wrong? That single question introduces sampling, bias and representation without naming any of them.
Simple Pattern Recognition and Decision Making
This is where CT and AI meet. Students already recognise patterns from Classes 3–5; the new step is turning a pattern into a decision rule and then testing where the rule fails. Unplugged classification with paper slips works better here than any software.
Ethics and Digital Responsibility
Digital footprints is the concept with the longest shelf life. Make it concrete: ask what a stranger could work out about them from what they posted last month. Password safety and privacy land better after that, not before.
The 40 hours of projects
Forty hours of interdisciplinary projects — two projects of 20 hours each — is the largest single block in the Class 6 allocation, and the part schools plan last. Design the checkpoints into the calendar before term starts. A 20-hour project retrofitted into the final month is not a project.
What teachers get wrong at Class 6
- Teaching AI before data. Basic Data Concepts underpins everything after it. Sequence it early.
- Reaching for tools. There is no requirement for students to use an AI tool in Class 6. Concepts first; the tools will still be there in Class 8, and will be different by then anyway.
- Treating ethics as a closing lecture. Digital responsibility works as discussion, not as a list of rules read out in the last period.
- Leaving projects to the end. Forty hours cannot be compressed.
