Class 5 is the final year of the preparatory stage — 50 hours of computational thinking inside Mathematics and The World Around Us, still with no AI content and no devices required. It is also the bridge year: what students build here is what the Class 6 AI chapters assume they already have.

Each chapter is problem-based, emphasising reasoning, logical deduction and systematic problem-solving against the same four competencies that run through Classes 3 to 5: abstract thinking, pattern recognition, decomposition and algorithmic thinking.
Four chapters that matter more than the rest
- Angles as Turns. Reframing an angle as a turn rather than a static shape is the single most computational idea in Class 5. It is the mental model behind robot movement, screen rotation and every “turn left 90 degrees” instruction a child will later write.
- Maps and Locations. Coordinates, routes and spatial instruction — algorithmic thinking with a real-world referent. Pairs naturally with We the Travellers.
- Grandmother’s Quilt and Symmetrical Designs. Pattern recognition at its most demanding: not just spotting a repeat but describing the rule that generates it. Describing the rule is the abstraction.
- Data Through Pictures. The direct precursor to Class 6’s Basic Data Concepts. Collecting, organising and representing data is exactly what the AI unit picks up next year.
How Class 5 sets up Class 6 AI
This is worth being deliberate about, because the handover is where schools lose ground.

A Class 5 teacher who occasionally says “notice that a machine could follow this rule, but it could not decide whether the rule was fair” has done most of the conceptual groundwork for Class 6 without teaching any AI at all.
The 50 hours and who teaches them
Fifty hours a year, integrated into Mathematics and The World Around Us. No separate period, no specialist required — the class teacher is normally the right choice. One substantial CT lesson a week works better than daily fragments, because these chapters depend on discussion.
What teachers get wrong at Class 5
- Teaching angles as shapes. If Angles as Turns is delivered as standard geometry, the computational idea is lost entirely.
- Accepting “I can see the pattern”. Push for the rule. Seeing is recognition; stating the rule is abstraction, and only one of them transfers.
- Skipping the bridge. Class 5 is the last chance to build data intuition before AI arrives. Rushing Data Through Pictures costs you in Class 6.
- Assuming readiness. Students arriving in Class 6 without the four competencies find the AI unit abstract and forgettable. The AI content is only 20 hours; it cannot also teach the foundations.

Do Class 5 students need computers?
No. All fifteen chapters work unplugged.
Is Class 5 CT assessed by written exam?
Assessment is continuous, formative and competency-based, focused on applying knowledge. At Class 5 that means observation, activity work and reflection rather than a terminal written test.
