From the 2026–27 session, CBSE schools must deliver Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence to Classes 3 to 8 — 50 hours a year for Classes 3–5 and 100 hours across Classes 6–8. The curriculum is published. What is not supplied is trained teachers, lesson-level resources, or any way to tell whether your school is ready. This guide covers that gap.

The AI content progresses deliberately. Class 6 covers introduction to AI, everyday examples, basic data concepts and digital ethics. Class 7 moves to classification, regression and clustering, plus computer vision, NLP and bias awareness. Class 8 covers the AI project lifecycle — define the problem, collect data, test AI tools, reflect and improve — and responsible AI principles.

Is your school ready? Eight questions that predict the rest

Most readiness checklists are too long to be used. These eight are the ones that actually correlate with a school delivering this well:

  1. Can you name the specific teacher who will teach CT & AI to each of Classes 3 through 8?
  2. Has that teacher been trained on AI content, as opposed to computer or ICT content?
  3. Have you found the 50 and 100 hours in the timetable, on paper, for this year?
  4. Do you have resources that map chapter-for-chapter onto the CBSE handbooks, or only generic AI material?
  5. Do you have an assessment plan that uses projects and reflective journals, since that is what CBSE’s model expects?
  6. Does your school have a written AI use policy covering both staff and students?
  7. Do you know what your teachers are currently pasting into consumer chatbots?
  8. Can you explain the programme to a parent in two minutes without using the word “future-ready”?

Question 7 is the one schools miss. A teacher pasting a student’s answer sheet, a parent’s phone number or a child’s photograph into a consumer AI tool is disclosing a minor’s personal data. That is a governance problem, not a training problem, and it is already happening in most schools.

The order of operations that works

Schools that struggle usually get the sequence wrong — they buy resources first and train last. The order that works:

  1. Audit the teachers, not the infrastructure. Devices are rarely the binding constraint; teacher confidence is. Find out honestly where your staff sit on the four AI literacy domains before you buy anything.
  2. Train before the term, not during it. A teacher learning the content one week ahead of the class cannot answer questions, and students notice immediately.
  3. Choose chapter-aligned resources. Generic AI curriculum forces your teachers to do the mapping work themselves, which is the work they have least time for.
  4. Fix the timetable on paper. Fifty hours that exist in a plan but not in a timetable become twelve hours by February.
  5. Write the AI policy early. It is far easier to set rules before a dispute than during one.
  6. Decide assessment up front. Projects and journals need to be designed into the year, not retrofitted in the last month.

Why teacher preparation is the whole game

There is good evidence for prioritising the adults. Microsoft’s 2026 Work Trend Index, covering 20,000 workers across 10 countries including India, found organisational factors — culture, manager support, practice norms — accounted for 67% of reported AI impact, roughly twice the contribution of individual mindset at 32%. Where managers actively modelled AI use, reported value rose 17 points and critical thinking about AI rose 22 points.

In a school the head of department is that manager. A CT & AI programme that the academic leadership does not visibly participate in produces compliance, not literacy.

Nationally this is already moving: the Ministry of Education’s AI Literacy for Teachers programme, launched in May 2026 through Bodhan AI at IIT Madras, targets over a million teachers by 2027. Within two years a teacher without basic AI literacy will be the exception.

How to choose a CT & AI curriculum partner

The market filled up quickly after the mandate was announced. Ten questions worth asking any provider:

  1. Does your material map chapter-for-chapter to the CBSE handbooks, or is it adapted from a foreign curriculum?
  2. Who wrote it, and what is their actual background in both AI and school pedagogy?
  3. Is teacher training included, or sold separately once we are committed?
  4. What happens in a classroom with no reliable internet?
  5. How much of it works unplugged?
  6. What does assessment look like, and does it match CBSE’s project-and-journal model?
  7. Can we see a full sample chapter before signing, not a brochure?
  8. What is the per-student cost at our actual enrolment, all in?
  9. Who do our teachers contact in week three when something does not work?
  10. What happens when CBSE revises the curriculum?

Question 1 separates most of the field. Question 9 separates most of the rest.

Assessment: what CBSE’s model actually asks for

CBSE’s approach to CT & AI assessment spans written tests, practical exams, thematic projects, reflective journals, group discussions and teacher observation journals. The weighting toward projects and reflection is deliberate — AI literacy is judgement in use, and a written test cannot see judgement.

Practically, this means designing three or four project checkpoints into the year from the start, and giving teachers a rubric they can apply consistently. Retrofitting this in the final month is the single most common failure mode.

Frequently asked questions

Is CBSE’s CT & AI curriculum mandatory?

It applies to Classes 3 to 8 from the 2026–27 session as part of the official curriculum. Schools should work from the CBSE Academic circulars and handbooks for the precise compliance language, since implementation guidance continues to be issued.

Do we need a computer lab to teach it?

Not for a large share of it. The four computational thinking pillars, bias, classification and the idea of learning from examples can all be taught unplugged. Devices matter more from Class 7 onward, and even then in bursts rather than continuously.

Which teacher should teach CT & AI?

Not automatically the computer teacher. At the preparatory stage the content is embedded in Mathematics and The World Around Us, so the class teacher is often the better fit. What matters is who can be trained properly, not who already owns the ICT period.

How much does implementing CT & AI cost a school?

It varies with enrolment and how much you already have. The line items are teacher training, student and teacher resources, some device access, and assessment design. Training is the item schools most often underfund and most often regret underfunding.

What about ICSE and state board schools?

The CBSE mandate does not bind them, but the underlying frameworks and teacher preparation transfer directly. Many non-CBSE schools are adopting similar programmes on their own initiative, partly because parents are now asking.

Should we write an AI use policy for students?

Yes, and before the disputes start. Five lines is enough to begin: what is allowed, what is banned, what must be disclosed, what data never goes into an AI tool, and who decides exceptions. Detection software is not a substitute — it remains unreliable.
