Class 3 is the entry point to CBSE’s Computational Thinking and AI curriculum — 50 hours a year, integrated into existing Mathematics and The World Around Us periods, with no artificial intelligence content and no devices required. It builds four competencies: abstract thinking, pattern recognition, decomposition and algorithmic thinking, plus analytical and verbal reasoning.
The most common mistake at this stage is treating it as a computer subject. It is not. It is a way of posing mathematics problems so that children practise thinking in steps, spotting structure and breaking things down.

Every chapter is built around a familiar Indian context — a festival, a family visit, a class party, a fair. That is deliberate. Eight-year-olds reason far better about a situation they can picture than about an abstract puzzle, and the computational thinking is smuggled in underneath.
Which competency each chapter is really teaching
This is the mapping teachers need and the handbook does not spell out on every page. Chapter titles look like ordinary maths; the CT skill is in how the questions are framed.

A teacher who works through Fair Share as a division lesson has taught division. A teacher who asks “how would you explain your sharing rule to someone who has never seen these sweets?” has taught decomposition and abstraction. Same chapter, different subject.
The 50 hours: where they come from
Fifty hours a year across Classes 3 to 5, integrated into Mathematics and The World Around Us. There is no separate CT period at the preparatory stage.
Across roughly 40 teaching weeks that is a little over an hour a week. In practice most schools find it works better as a block — one CT-flavoured lesson a week rather than ten minutes sprinkled daily, because the activities need time to breathe. Whichever you choose, put it in the written timetable. Hours that live only in a plan do not survive contact with the exam calendar.
Who should teach Class 3 CT
The class teacher, in almost every case — not the computer teacher. The content sits inside Maths and TWAU, the activities are unplugged, and the person who already knows how these particular children reason is worth more here than technical knowledge.
Schools that hand Class 3 CT to the ICT department usually end up with children doing typing practice labelled as computational thinking.
What teachers get wrong at Class 3
- Teaching the answer instead of the method. At this stage a wrong answer arrived at through clear steps is worth more than a right answer arrived at by guessing. Mark the reasoning.
- Rushing to devices. There is no requirement for a computer in Class 3 CT, and screen time displaces the discussion that does the actual work.
- Treating it as extra maths. If the lesson looks identical to a normal maths lesson, the CT dimension has been lost.
- Skipping the “explain it to someone else” step. Articulating a procedure is how abstraction gets built, and it is the step most often cut when time is short.
- Not recording anything. Assessment at this stage relies on observation and reflection. If nothing is captured through the year, there is nothing to report at the end of it.
How Class 3 is assessed
CBSE describes assessment for CT & AI as continuous, formative and competency-based, focused on applying knowledge rather than recalling it. At Class 3 that means teacher observation, activity work and simple reflection rather than written tests.
Practically: keep a short observation record per child per term against the four competencies. It takes minutes if done as you go, and is impossible to reconstruct in March.
Frequently asked questions
Is there any AI content in Class 3?
No. AI content begins at Class 6. Classes 3 to 5 build computational thinking only.
Do Class 3 students need computers?
No. The chapters are activity-based and work with paper, objects and discussion. This is one of the few genuinely device-free parts of the curriculum, and schools with limited infrastructure should take advantage of that.

Not automatically. Coding can build algorithmic thinking, but the Class 3 competencies also include pattern recognition, decomposition and abstraction taught through the specified chapter contexts. Check your coding programme against the four competencies rather than assuming overlap.
