Admission to the IIT Madras BS MG programme is through a free, merit-based Qualifier process. There is no entrance fee or qualifying cutoff — just four weeks of learning and a final exam. Here is the step-by-step flow:

1. Apply online at ds.study.iitm.ac.in during the application window.
2. Access 4 weeks of content for four Foundation courses: Mathematics 1, Statistics 1, Computational Thinking, and English 1.
3. Submit weekly assignments. The average score of your best 5 out of 7 weekly assignments must be ≥ 40/100 to qualify for the exam.
4. Write the Qualifier Exam in-person at a designated exam centre.
5. Clear the exam with the minimum required score — you are now admitted. Your Qualifier Exam score also counts as Quiz 1 for Foundation courses.

Applications for the May 2026 term are currently open. The last date to apply is May 31, 2026.

Assessment Pattern

Each course uses three types of assessments, ensuring continuous learning rather than a single high-stakes exam:

• Weekly Online Assignments (ongoing): 12 assignments per term. Average of best 5 out of 7 must be ≥ 40/100 to qualify for the end-term exam.
• Two In-Person Invigilated Quizzes: Conducted at end of Weeks 4 and 8. Attending at least one is mandatory.
• In-Person End-Term Exam: 1.5 hours per course. Accounts for 50% of the Total Course Score. Must have the assignment score eligibility and have attended at least one quiz.

Grading scale: Letter grades S, A, B, C, D, E for passing; U for failing. Absolute grading is used throughout the programme. Minimum total score to pass any course: 40/100.
