Everything you need to know: programme structure, full course list, fees, eligibility, qualifier process, scholarships, and May 2026 admission dates.
Programme Overview
The IIT Madras BS in Management and Data Science is a four-year, fully online Bachelor of Science degree offered by India’s top-ranked technical institution. Approved by the IIT Madras Senate, the degree carries the same institutional weight as an on-campus programme — graduates become official alumni of IIT Madras.
Launched to address the industry’s surging demand for analytically sophisticated managers, the programme blends core management disciplines — finance, economics, marketing, human resources, supply chain — with rigorous data science and analytics training. Learners can study from anywhere in India or abroad, at a pace that suits their schedule.
Why Pursue the IIT Madras BS in Management & Data Science?
With digital transformation reshaping every industry, the most coveted professionals are no longer either managers or data scientists — they are both. This programme is designed precisely for that intersection. Here is why it stands out from other online management degrees in India:
- IIT Madras brand: India’s #1 ranked institution (NIRF 2024). The degree is senate-approved, not just a certificate.
- NEP 2020 aligned: Multiple entry and exit points — Foundation Certificate, Diploma, or full BS Degree — so you learn exactly as much as you need.
- Analytics-first curriculum: Courses like Marketing Analytics, Financial Analytics, HR Analytics, and Supply Chain Analytics make you genuinely data-fluent, not just management-literate.
- Industry-relevant electives: Choose from Economics of AI, Responsible AI, Digital Marketing, Brand Management, Financial Forensics, and more — building a specialisation unique to your goals.
- Affordable IIT quality: Total fees start at just ₹3,82,000 — a fraction of MBA costs at comparable private institutions.
- Open eligibility: No age limit, no specific stream required — any Class 12 pass student can apply.
Working professionals who want to upskill, fresh Class 12 graduates aiming for an IIT degree, commerce and science students seeking analytics exposure, and entrepreneurs who want data-backed decision-making skills — this programme works for all of them.

Eligibility Criteria
This programme has one of the most inclusive eligibility policies of any IIT degree:
- Must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in any year, from any stream (Science, Commerce, Arts).
- Must have studied English at Class 10 and Class 12.
- Must have studied Mathematics at Class 10.
- No age limit — working professionals and career-changers are equally welcome.
- School students who have appeared for Class 11 finals can apply; they may join after passing Class 12.
Students outside India can apply and write exams in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and UAE. Students in other countries can take remote proctored exams.
How the Qualifier Process Works
Admission to the IIT Madras BS MG programme is through a free, merit-based Qualifier process. There is no entrance fee or qualifying cutoff — just four weeks of learning and a final exam. Here is the step-by-step flow:
- Apply online at ds.study.iitm.ac.in during the application window.
- Access 4 weeks of content for four Foundation courses: Mathematics 1, Statistics 1, Computational Thinking, and English 1.
- Submit weekly assignments. The average score of your best 5 out of 7 weekly assignments must be ≥ 40/100 to qualify for the exam.
- Write the Qualifier Exam in-person at a designated exam centre.
- Clear the exam with the minimum required score — you are now admitted. Your Qualifier Exam score also counts as Quiz 1 for Foundation courses.
If you do not clear the Qualifier Exam in your first attempt, you are encouraged to reappear in the next term. There is no penalty for retrying.

- Weekly Online Assignments (ongoing): 12 assignments per term. Average of best 5 out of 7 must be ≥ 40/100 to qualify for the end-term exam.
- Two In-Person Invigilated Quizzes: Conducted at end of Weeks 4 and 8. Attending at least one is mandatory.
- In-Person End-Term Exam: 1.5 hours per course. Accounts for 50% of the Total Course Score. Must have the assignment score eligibility and have attended at least one quiz.
Grading scale: Letter grades S, A, B, C, D, E for passing; U for failing. Absolute grading is used throughout the programme. Minimum total score to pass any course: 40/100.
Exam centres are available across all major Indian cities including Amravati, Nagpur, Pune, Mumbai and 150+ other cities. International centres operate in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and UAE.
Elective Courses (26 Credits)
At the BS Degree Level, 26 elective credits let you build a specialisation. Choose from 22 elective courses spanning Finance, Economics, Marketing, Technology, and Strategy:
Particularly notable for the current industry landscape are Economics of AI, Responsible AI, and Digital Business Strategy — courses that are genuinely hard to find in traditional MBA programmes.
