Application Fees and Eligibility
| Category | Regular (by Sep 27) | Late window (by Oct 5) |
|---|---|---|
| Female / SC / ST / PwD | ₹1,000 per paper | ₹1,500 per paper |
| All other candidates | ₹2,000 per paper | ₹2,500 per paper |
Eligibility is refreshingly simple: anyone currently in the 3rd year or above of an undergraduate degree, or who has completed a government-approved degree in engineering, technology, science, architecture, commerce or humanities, can apply. There is no age limit and no attempt limit — including for students of the IIT Madras BS in Data Science programme, who are fully eligible for the DA paper. Appearing for two papers doubles the fee (one payment per paper).
Documents Checklist: Prepare These Before Aug 27
Applications stall at uploads, not at forms. Keep these ready as files before the portal opens:
1. DigiLocker account linked to Aadhaar — new for GATE 2027, identity verification runs through DigiLocker with facial recognition. Create/verify your account at digilocker.gov.in now, confirm your Aadhaar is linked and your registered mobile is active.
2. Recent passport-size photograph — clear, front-facing, plain light background, no glasses glare or caps. Because facial recognition will match this photo, use a genuinely recent one — an old or heavily edited photo is the single riskiest shortcut this year.
3. Signature image — dark ink on white paper, scanned crisp (not photographed at an angle).
4. Valid photo ID — Aadhaar (recommended, since DigiLocker uses it), passport, PAN, voter ID or driving licence. Carry the same ID to the exam hall.
5. Category / PwD certificates (if applicable) — SC/ST certificate or PwD/Dyslexia certificate in the prescribed format, as PDFs.
6. Degree details — institute name, roll number, year of entry/graduation for the qualifying degree.
The Application, Step by Step
Step 1 — Register on GOAPS. Go to gate2027.iitm.ac.in, open the application portal link, and sign up with your name (exactly as on your photo ID), email and mobile. You’ll receive an enrolment ID — save it; it’s your login for everything up to the result.
Step 2 — Verify identity via DigiLocker. Authorise the portal to pull your Aadhaar profile from DigiLocker and complete the facial-recognition capture in good lighting, face uncovered. This step replaces much of the old manual document scrutiny — done right, it actually makes approval faster.
Step 3 — Fill personal and academic details. Name, DOB and gender must match your ID letter-for-letter. Choose your category and PwD status carefully — these drive your fee and cannot be “upgraded” later.
Step 4 — Choose your paper(s). Select DA (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) as your primary paper. If you want a second paper (CS, MA, ST and other permitted combinations), add it now — see the next section before deciding.
Step 5 — Pick three exam cities. Preference order matters: choose the nearest city first and realistic backups second and third. City allotment lands 4 January 2027.
Step 6 — Upload photo, signature and certificates. Follow the size/dimension limits shown on the portal exactly; preview each upload at full size before confirming.
Step 7 — Pay and download. Pay online (UPI/card/net-banking), verify the payment status shows success, and download the submitted application PDF. Screenshot the confirmation — if payment deducts but status doesn’t update, wait 48 hours before paying again.
Choosing DA — and Should You Add a Second Paper?
GATE 2027 offers 30 papers and lets you attempt up to two from the permitted combinations. For DA aspirants the natural pairings are CS (huge syllabus overlap in programming, algorithms and databases), ST/MA (probability, statistics and linear algebra already overlap heavily — see my Probability & Statistics and Linear Algebra guides), or the brand-new RA (Robotics and Automation) paper. A second paper doubles your admission options for roughly 30–40% extra preparation — worthwhile if your target programmes accept either score, wasteful if you only want DA-specific MTech/MS seats. When in doubt, register for both now (you can skip a paper on exam day; you can’t add one later).
Also note the syllabus for GATE 2027 was revised after five years — before you plan, verify you’re studying the current outline with my section-by-section GATE DA 2027 syllabus breakdown.
Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected
Name mismatch with photo ID. “Piyush K. Wairale” vs “Piyush Kumar Wairale” is enough to trigger scrutiny. Copy your ID exactly.
Old or edited photographs. With facial recognition in the loop, a 3-year-old photo or a beautified image can fail matching at registration or — worse — at the exam gate.
Waiting for the deadline. Portal load peaks in the final 48 hours and payment gateways wobble. The correction window (Oct 14–21) exists, but category and paper changes are restricted — submit early, submit right.
Wrong category selection to “decide later”. Fee-affecting fields are the hardest to change. If your certificate isn’t ready, apply in the category you can prove.
Ignoring the confirmation PDF. No downloaded application + payment proof means no leverage if anything disputes later.
After You Submit: What Happens Next
Your application moves to scrutiny; if officials flag an upload you’ll get an email to fix it in the correction window (14–21 October). Exam city allotment arrives 4 January 2027, the admit card follows on the portal (date to be announced), you write the paper on one of 6/7/13/14/20/21 February, and results land 19 March 2027 with scores valid three years. Between now and February is exactly one full, well-planned preparation cycle — my GATE DA preparation strategy maps it month by month, and the exam date & notification tracker keeps every milestone in one place.

When does GATE DA 2027 registration start and end?
It opens 27 August 2026 and closes 27 September 2026 (regular fee), with a late-fee extension to 5 October 2026, at gate2027.iitm.ac.in. The originally announced Aug 14 start was postponed by IIT Madras.
What is the GATE 2027 application fee for the DA paper?
₹1,000 per paper for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates; ₹2,000 for all others. The extended window adds ₹500. A second paper is charged separately.
Is DigiLocker mandatory for GATE 2027?
IIT Madras has announced that registration uses DigiLocker-based identity verification with facial recognition. Set up an Aadhaar-linked DigiLocker account before applying to avoid getting stuck mid-form.
Can final-year students apply? Is there an age limit?
Students in the 3rd year or above of an undergraduate programme are eligible, and there is no age or attempt limit. GATE scores remain valid for three years.
Can I change my paper or exam city after submitting?
Limited corrections are allowed in the 14–21 October window, but paper and category changes are restricted — decide before you submit. City preferences can usually be edited during correction.
